Argentina eliminates Brazil, the reigning champions, from the Olympics in Paris

Brazil’s chances of capturing a third consecutive men’s Olympic football championship were dashed on Sunday when they were eliminated from qualifying for the Paris Games by Argentina 1-0.

On the last day of the South American pre-Olympic competition in Venezuela, Brazil, the reigning champions of Rio 2016 and the Tokyo Games postponed due to the Covid pandemic, needed just a draw against their fiercest regional rivals.

But with to Luciano Gondou’s goal in the second half in Caracas, Argentina is the team that is heading to France in search of a third championship, having won two in 2004 and 2008.

Defeating Venezuela 2-0, Paraguay secured the other South American ticket to Paris 2024.

Carlos Jara Saguier’s Paraguay beat Argentina in the qualifying competition, winning the gold medal thanks to goals from Marcelo Perez in the 75th minute and midfielder Diego Gomez with a penalty in the 48th.

Unlike the Olympics, when teams are permitted to use three overage reinforcements, the qualifying competition was limited to players who were under the age of 23.

And now Argentina will be calling to attempt to convince one very unique player—36-year-old Lionel Messi—who was a standout in the team’s 2008 Olympic gold run, to go to Paris with them.

“Everyone is aware of my friendship with Leo… and we welcome him back to the team,” said coach Javier Mascherano, who was Messi’s longtime Argentina teammate.
