Ian Chappell, a former captain of Australia, shared his thoughts on Team India benching Shreyas Iyer for the last three Test matches against England. Iyer did not make the cut in the remaining matches after putting in a lackluster performance in the first two Tests.

Iyer was reportedly experiencing back and groin pain before to the team announcement, but the BCCI did not mention any fitness concerns about him while naming the squad for the last three Test matches.

Chappell said that although KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja’s comeback is a huge one, the Indian squad suffers greatly from Virat Kohli’s absence.

“India is a powerful nation with a capable leader in Rohit Sharma. The fact that Virat Kohli won’t be available for the remainder of the series is a setback, but they will be considerably bolstered by the return of Ravindra Jadeja and KL Rahul from injury, Chappell wrote in his ESPN Cricinfo blog.

While this was going on, Chappell recommended that the selectors give up on Shreyas Iyer and stop exaggerating his batsmanship after removing him from the team.

He said, “Hopefully, the selectors will now learn to value Kuldeep Yadav’s wicket-taking ability more and stop overestimating Shreyas Iyer’s batting ability.”

Regarding England’s cricket squad, Chappell said that the team would benefit greatly if captain Ben Stokes returns to the role of all-rounder.

“If Stokes can return to being an all-rounder, it will be a huge benefit to England, as his bowling is a unique weapon.” He is one of the greatest in that position, so it would also benefit if he fielded in the slips, particularly against the spinners,” Chappell noted.

Additionally, he counseled hitter Stokes to lead by example at the beginning of the innings.

Stokes may want to examine his own hitting technique. His play would be better at the beginning of each innings if he took more initiative. Although Stokes is an excellent hitter, Chappell said that he performs best when he is trying to score runs.
