US Open winner Gauff struggled early in the match, dropping her first set and needing to save two break opportunities in her third, but after that, the 19-year-old showed she was unbeatable in the battle of the teenagers. In the second set in a match that lasted seventy minutes, 16-year-old qualifier Fruhvirtova, who had defeated world no. 48 Anna Blinkova in the first round, managed only ten points.

She played very well at first, and I was able to improve. Gauff, who hit five aces, stated, “I felt I served well and I did better on the returns.”

The world no. 42 Varvara Gracheva, the eighth seed, will be the opponent for the American next.

Conversely, Petra Martic, ranked seventh in the draw, defeated Yue Yuan of China, 6-2, 6-2, and will now face the victor of the match between Elina Svitolina, ranked second, and Emma Raducanu, ranked third.

Raducanu, a former US Open winner, is now ranked 301 in the world after an eight-month layoff due to injuries.

January 14 marks the commencement of the Australian Open.
